What Is Berserk?

Berserk is a dark fantasy manga created by Kentaro Miura, first published in 1989. It follows Guts, a mercenary born from a corpse and raised in brutal conditions, as he battles demons, corrupt nobility, and ultimately the former friend who sacrificed everything — including him — for godlike power. After Miura's passing in 2021, the series has been continued by Studio Gaga with the blessing of his longtime collaborator Kouji Mori.

Is Berserk Suitable for You?

This is important: Berserk is not for everyone. The manga contains extremely graphic violence, body horror, and deeply disturbing scenes of abuse. It earns its darkness — none of it is gratuitous without purpose — but you should go in informed. If you can handle the content, what you'll find is one of the most emotionally resonant and visually stunning works in all of comics.

Story Arcs at a Glance

  1. Black Swordsman Arc — Introduces Guts in the present timeline. Dark, gritty, and deliberately disorienting. (Volumes 1–3)
  2. Golden Age Arc — The series' crown jewel. A flashback covering Guts' time with the Band of the Hawk and his complex relationship with Griffith. Culminates in the Eclipse. (Volumes 3–13)
  3. Conviction Arc — Guts journeys alone, haunted. The world's supernatural underpinning deepens. (Volumes 14–21)
  4. Millennium Falcon Arc — The longest arc, featuring new companions and escalating fantasy world-building. (Volumes 22–34)
  5. Fantasia Arc — Ongoing. A transformed world with higher stakes than ever. (Volumes 35+)

The Art: A Visual Masterpiece

Miura's artwork is extraordinary. His ability to render massive battles, intricate armor designs, and horrific demon forms — all by hand — set a standard that few manga artists have matched. Reading Berserk in physical volumes gives you the full impact of his double-page spreads.

Should You Start From Volume 1?

Yes, but know this: many readers find the first two volumes rougher than what follows. The story truly clicks into gear with the Golden Age Arc. Stick with it. The payoff is immense.

How to Read Berserk

  • Physical volumes — Dark Horse Comics publishes official English translations. Deluxe hardcover editions collect three volumes each and showcase the art beautifully.
  • Digital — Available on ComiXology/Kindle and other digital platforms.
  • Manga apps — Check region availability on services like Azuki or BookWalker.

The Anime Adaptations

There are three anime adaptations: the 1997 series (covers Golden Age, beloved for its atmosphere), the 2016–2017 CGI series (widely criticized for production quality), and three theatrical films covering the Golden Age Arc. The manga is definitively the best way to experience the full story.

Why Berserk Still Matters

Berserk influenced an enormous range of works — from the Dark Souls video game series to Vinland Saga to dozens of other dark fantasy manga. Understanding it means understanding a cornerstone of the genre. Beyond its cultural impact, it's simply a story about trauma, perseverance, and what it means to keep moving forward when the world has given you every reason to stop.
